Much of Britain continues to be affected by snow, ice and strong winds, leading to flight cancellations and road closures. Schools were shut in some areas. Thousands of people in large parts of the east coast of the UK were told to prepare for potentially life-threatening floods as gale-force winds and tidal surges looked set to cause further misery.
