Prince Harry Expressed 'Gesture of Regret' After AI Speech Teleprompter Glitch, Expert Claims

Prince Harry's speech about artificial intelligence at the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting in New York was interrupted by a teleprompter fault on 23 September.

Body language commentator Judi James later described one of his movements during the pause as a 'gesture of regret.' Her words were an interpretation of his appearance, not an account of what he felt.

James said his expression appeared 'almost tearful.' She described him drawing his lips inward as a 'gesture of regret' and characterised a hand movement as anxious. She also used the word 'disgust' to describe another movement. Each was her reading of visible behaviour during an unexpected interruption. None establishes that Harry cried or felt regret, anxiety or disgust.

The fault broke the flow of a prepared address at a moment when Harry was pressing his audience to act on the risks he sees in emerging technology.

He stopped speaking, spent several moments on stage and then walked off. The pause gave James a brief moment to assess his behaviour, but Harry made no statement about his feelings during it.

His exit was also only part of what happened. Other speakers appeared while the teleprompter issue was addressed, and Harry returned to deliver the rest of his remarks. The longer sequence matters because his warning to the audience continued after the moment James described.
