Reese Witherspoon Welcomes Son Reuters

Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon and husband Jim Toth welcome their first child, son Tennessee James. The news was confirmed by a representative of the Legally Blonde actress to People magazine. The representative also confirmed both Witherspoon and James were healthy and happy. The 36 year old Academy Award winning actress (for Best Actress in Walk The Line (2005)) spent a couple of nights in hospital earlier this summer, sparking rumours of an early delivery.

Witherspoon and Toth married in March last year, in a ceremony at her ranch in Ojai, California. The small but high-profile guest list included fellow actors Renee Zellweger, Salma Hayek, Sean Penn, Scarlett Johansson, Tobey Maguire and Robert Downey Jr.

"Right after the wedding, Reese expressed a desire to have a baby with Jim," a source previously told the magazine, "Reese has been very open with her kids about her plans to expand the family."

She hinted at her desire to have more children when on television show Daybreak in the UK. The actress is already mother to daughter Ava, 13, and son Deacon, 8, from a previous marriage to actor Ryan Phillipe. The two, who co-starred in Cruel Intentions (1999), split in 2006.

"I hug all my girlfriends' babies. They're all so stinking cute," she was quoted as saying, and adding, "There's a little sadness as they're growing up and walking away from you, but it kind of changes the whole dynamic. We have really funny dinner conversations now, and they know more about certain topics than I ever, ever knew."

Meanwhile, if you're wondering why Witherspoon decided on Tennessee James, it could be because of her fondness for the state she grew up in.

"It [her California ranch] reminds me of growing up in Tennessee, where we spent all day outside," she told Elle Décor once, "I wanted my children to have that experience, to get muddy and hang out with the animals. ... It's like having a little bit of Tennessee in California."
