Robinhood CEO Says US Household Stock Ownership Could Rise to 95% as AI Bots Render DIY-Trading Obsolete
Tenev believes Robinhood has considerably helped ramp up US household stock ownership in recent years

Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev sees a future in which almost every American household could own stocks as AI agents increasingly take over investing through automated trades and portfolio management.
In a recent interview on The Iced Coffee Hour, Tenev discussed his long-term vision for financial markets, focusing primarily on the expansion of stock ownership in the US, AI-powered trading agents, and the possibility that parts of the AI boom could be experiencing bubble-like valuations. He also sees prediction markets as far more than a niche betting product, adding that Robinhood is at the forefront of the 'prediction market super cycle.'
Tenev's 95% US Stock Ownership Prediction
Tenev pointed to current US household stock ownership of roughly 65% and asked whether the figure could eventually reach '95% plus'.
His argument fits Robinhood's broader strategy of making investing accessible to more people. The company reported 28.4 million funded customers and $369 billion in total platform assets as of 30th June.
Robinhood has already begun testing how that future would play out through its Agentic Trading product. Tenev said more than 100,000 people had integrated and opened Agentic accounts, with trading initially focused on stocks before expanding to options. Robinhood also plans to extend the system further, including cryptocurrency.
The idea is simple: instead of a person manually researching a company, deciding how much to invest, and placing an order, an AI agent could eventually perform much of that work.
Tenev's vision is particularly ambitious. He said the goal is for an agent to have access to the tools available to a human Robinhood trader.
However, the technology is not yet seamless. Tenev acknowledged that users currently need a degree of technical sophistication to connect systems such as Codex or Claude Code to Robinhood. He also said AI models can sometimes resist trading instructions.
Tenev's 95% stock-ownership vision is not simply based on getting more people to download Robinhood. He pointed to several initiatives that could broaden participation, including Trump Accounts and Robinhood's expansion into private markets. Tenev noted that US household stock ownership is currently around 65%, compared with the low 50s before Robinhood emerged, and said the company believes it has 'meaningfully contributed' to that increase.
Tenev Believes AI Boom is Not Completely Immune to Bubble Risks
Tenev's bullish outlook on AI does not mean he believes every AI-related valuation is justified.
The interview specifically addressed bubble valuations and alarm bells, making the distinction between the underlying technology and the prices investors are willing to pay for companies associated with it. This matters because an industry can undergo genuine technological transformation while individual stocks become excessively valued.
For retail investors, an AI boom could therefore create two different opportunities: AI may improve how people invest, while AI-related shares themselves could remain vulnerable to sharp corrections if expectations outpace earnings.
Tenev has also discussed the possibility of AI changing financial advice. Robinhood has been developing AI-powered financial tools, while Tenev has previously said human advisers are likely to remain relevant for clients who specifically want human intuition, experience, and accountability.
The larger prediction from Tenev is therefore not simply that AI will make trading faster. He sees AI agents, wider stock ownership, and easier access to financial products converging into a fundamentally different investing market.
If AI agents make investing increasingly automated and platforms make markets easier to access, Tenev believes far more Americans could become investors and ultimately drive wealth creation.
The technology is still developing, and his predictions are not guarantees. However, with more than 100,000 Agentic accounts already opened, Robinhood's experiment with AI-powered investing has moved from a theoretical concept into an early-stage product used by real investors.
