Overview

Swiss great Roger Federer comes into the quarter-final clash after beating Aegon Open Championship winner Steve Johnson 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 in the fourth round on 3 July. Federer has won all his four games at Wimbledon 2016 in straight sets and has admitted that he did not think his progress would be this uncomplicated.

These straight-forward wins have added to the self confidence and belief of the world number three, considering he is coming from an injury, suffering recurring back problems and undergoing his first ever knee surgery.

The 17-time Grand Slam winner has had a season to forget so far, failing to secure even one title, his worst showing since he started playing tennis as a professional. With Novak Djokovic eliminated, he will go as the favourite to win not only in this clash but also the tournament.

Marin Cilic

His opponent Marin Cilic is considered as one of the dark horses to win the tournament, but has not accomplished much in the last two years. The Croatian has not had a difficult draw so far, beating world number 589 Brian Baker, number 94 Sergiy Stakhovsky, number 123 Lukas Lacko and number six Kei Nishikori on the way to the quarter-final.

Cilic is known for his big serves and will have good memories of their last meeting where he beat Federer 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the semi-final of the US Open. The 27-year-old will look to channel some of that energy and upset the seven-time Wimbledon champion once again when they meet on Wednesday.
