Sarah Ferguson is 'inconsolable' and increasingly fearful about her own future in the weeks since her ex-husband Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, according to sources close to the former Duchess of York.

Ferguson, 66, is believed to have retreated to the French Alps. Insiders told Closer Magazine she has been 'crying a lot' and 'panicking' since Thames Valley Police detained Andrew on 19 February, his 66th birthday.

'This has shaken her,' the source said. 'She's repeatedly said she has nothing to hide. She'd be transparent and would cooperate with the police. She's not running from anything.'

The source said the strain goes well beyond legal concerns. 'It's also the humiliating public scrutiny, and the feeling that it's all crashing down around her.'

No One Can Protect Her Now

According to the same insider, Ferguson is receiving no support from the royal family. Not publicly, and not privately.

'She knows no one can protect her now. Certainly not the Palace,' the source told the magazine. 'She knows the family cannot publicly rally around Andrew, and that leaves her feeling very exposed.'

The source added: 'She's scared, but for herself. Sarah has weathered scandals before but she's not certain she'll come out the other side this time. That's what frightens her most.'

Ferguson and Andrew divorced in 1996 but remained close, sharing Royal Lodge in Windsor until both were forced to leave earlier this year. She once described them as 'the happiest divorced couple in the world.'

A separate friend of the former duchess told GB News she is 'in the depths of despair' and believes 'the world is out to get her.' People around Ferguson, including Ferguson herself, are said to be worried about her mental health.

'Sarah wants to be left alone to get on with her life,' the friend said, 'but that's unlikely to happen.'

First Senior Royal Arrested In Centuries

Andrew's arrest made him the first senior British royal to be detained by police in nearly 400 years. He spent 11 hours at Aylsham Police Station in Norfolk before being released under investigation.

The detention came after the US Department of Justice released 3.5 million files connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Among the documents were emails that appeared to show Andrew forwarding confidential trade reports to Epstein while serving as UK trade envoy in 2010.

King Charles responded by saying he had 'learned with the deepest concern' about his brother's arrest and that 'the law must take its course.' Buckingham Palace was not given advance notice of the detention, ABC News confirmed.

Ferguson's situation has worsened as her own ties to Epstein have come back under the spotlight. Emails from the released files reportedly show her repeatedly contacting the financier to ask for money to clear debts. The correspondence suggests she remained in touch with Epstein even after his release from prison for sex offences against children, according to Fox News.

One email exchange appeared to show Ferguson and Epstein discussing a tour of Buckingham Palace. In another, from 2009, she wrote that she would bring Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie to a lunch with him. Whether either took place is unclear.

Both daughters are reportedly struggling with the revelations. Sources told Fox News that Beatrice and Eugenie are 'aghast' at their mother's emails and 'appalled' by photographs of their father at Epstein's New York mansion. Neither has spoken publicly.

Ferguson has previously described her association with Epstein as 'a gigantic error of judgment.' She was last seen publicly on 25 September 2025. Since then, reports place her in Switzerland, the French Alps, and the UAE.

Andrew has consistently denied all wrongdoing in connection with Epstein and has not commented on the latest allegations. Both he and Ferguson deny any involvement in criminal activity.
