Selena Gomez's mother reacts to loving display with The Weeknd at the Met Gala

The Met Gala in New York City on Monday night (1 May) was an eventful outing for lovebirds Selena Gomez and The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye). Arm-in-arm, the new couple arrived on the glamorous red carpet and turned heads with their public display of affection.

And mama Gomez seems to be totally approving of this blossoming romance.

Mandy Teefey, who is known to be quite close to her pop-star daughter, left the sweetest message for Gomez on her recent Met Gala picture with the Starboy hitmaker. "Glowing, smiling, looking health and equal love. Mama is happy XO," she wrote in the comments section of an Instagram photo shared by The Weeknd.

The adorable image taken on the stairs of NYC's Museum Of Art shows 27-year-old Tesfaye with his arm around 24-year-old Gomez as they posed for the flashing paparazzi. Stylish as ever, the Same Old Love songstress rocked a white custom Coach gown for the annual fashion gala while her beau kept it dapper in a classic tuxedo.

The singer / actor looked radiant as she sashayed on the red carpet following her recent comeback to the limelight.

In a statement shared in October 2016, Gomez had announced her brief break from media and career as she took time out to focus on her health and happiness amid her battle with autoimmune disease lupus.

She shows no signs of slowing down with her new songs and a brand new TV show – 13 Reasons Why – that she co-produced with her mother.

Earlier, in a premiere of the acclaimed Netflix series, Teefey explained how the break helped Gomez reconnect with the real world.

"You asked what it is [like] to feel like you're in this world," she said, "We're in a bubble. It's not a real world. You don't really realize it until you go out of this bubble and you're like, 'Oh, OK.'"

The proud mother also attributed her daughter's newfound glow to the time spent away from fame.
