KEY POINTS

  • Nico Rosberg qualified on pole for the 2016 Singapore Grand Prix.
  • Daniel Ricciardo beat Lewis Hamilton to take second place on the grid.

Nico Rosberg put in a flawless lap in the final session of qualifying to take pole position at the Marina Bay Street circuit on Saturday (17 September). Daniel Ricciardo took second place after Lewis Hamilton made a number of mistakes in his qualifying lap and had to settle for third place. Max Verstappen, who complained of lack of front end grip during the entire session was in fourth place with Kimi Raikonnen rounding up the top five.

However, the big news of the day was that Sebastian Vettel – who suffered a suspension failure at the start of qualifying – was eliminated in Q1. He will start the race at the back of the grid and will have a long evening in Singapore trying to make his way up in what is the most physically demanding race of the season.

Toro Rosso seemed to have found a sweet spot on the street circuit and despite running massively underpowered engine; their superior chassis design has helped Carlos Sainz qualify sixth ahead of the more favoured Force India, Williams and McLaren-Honda cars.

Sergio Perez, who qualified tenth, has been handed a eight-place grid penalty for two yellow flag infringements in the same lap. This will see Valtteri Bottas move into the top 10, but he will have the choice of starting on any of the three compounds unlike the rest of the top 10, who will have to start the race on the tyre they used in Q2.

The Mercedes cars and Kimi Raikonnen will start on the purple walled ultra-soft compound, while the Red Bull Racing cars have switched strategy and will start on the super-soft compound. It is likely to be a two-stop race, and it will interesting to see if either Ricciardo or Verstappen can challenge the Silver Arrows cars for the win.

Where to watch live

The race starts at 1pm BST with Sky Sports F1 and Sky Sports F1 HD providing live TV coverage. Real-time internet updates are available on the Live Timing section of the sport's official website.
