A teenage Syria youth football team player has reportedly been killed in a mortar attack in the war-torn country.

The Syrian Football Association said Tarek Ghrair, 15, was killed on Tuesday when a mortar exploded near his home in Ghouta, a district of ravaged city Homs.

Nine people in total were reportedly killed in the blast, near the city's football stadium.

Lebanese newspaper The Daily Star quoting the Syria News Agency said the district under the control of government forces, came under attack by terrorists.

The news came amid reports of mortar rounds being fired at schools in the Syrian capital Damascus on Tuesday and said to have killed a child wounding more than 40 people.
