A gunfight has broken out in in Lashkar Gah, , after suspected Taliban suicide bombers launched an attack on a Kabul bank branch.

Police have confirmed the militants have taken hostages after the blast tore through the provincial capital.

The attack took place while the bank was busy with customers taking out their salaries, reports claim.

An unknown number of civilians were inside, police said and witnesses told Reuters they heard the explosion and subsequent gunfire.

"According to our information, there were four Taliban, one of them detonated his explosives and three are fighting with security forces," said Farid Ahmad Obaid, spokesman for Helmand's police chief.
