Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, best known as Thor and Hulk from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are back together in the action thriller Crime 101. The film had its European premiere in London on 28 January 2026, drawing crowds eager to see the pair in a new light.
Directed by Bart Layton, the movie is based on Don Winslow's 2020 novella and follows a jewel thief's final heist amid a detective's pursuit. With a release date of 12 February 2026, it's their first non-superhero collaboration.
From Superheroes to Street-Level Drama
The plot centres on Mike Davis, played by Hemsworth, a meticulous thief who targets high-value items along California's 101 Freeway without leaving traces or resorting to violence. Ruffalo stars as Detective Lou Lubesnick, who identifies a pattern in the crimes and closes in.
The story escalates when Davis partners with Sharon, a disillusioned insurance broker portrayed by Halle Berry, for a multi-million dollar robbery that changes everything. The film explores psychological tension rather than explosive action, a shift from their Marvel roles. Set against the sun-bleached grit of Los Angeles, it weaves themes of redemption and defiance.
Supporting cast includes Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Nick Nolte. Layton, known for documentaries like The Imposter, brings a realistic edge to the thriller. Critics have noted similarities to Michael Mann's Heat, with Hemsworth and Ruffalo echoing De Niro and Pacino's dynamic.
Behind the Scenes of Crime 101
Production began after Amazon MGM Studios acquired the rights in a bidding war, reportedly for £65.3 million ($90 million). Initially, Pedro Pascal was attached but later replaced by Ruffalo. Hemsworth, who also produces, read the script and immediately thought of Ruffalo. 'I signed on to the film first. I read the script and thought of Mark, texted Mark and he said, "Oh my God, this is one of the greatest things I've read",' Hemsworth said.
Filming took place in Los Angeles, capturing the sun-bleached grit of the city. Layton adapted the novella himself, focusing on character depth over spectacle. The timeline from acquisition in 2023 to release in 2026 reflects the project's fast track, with trailers highlighting the cat-and-mouse chase. The R rating and 2-hour 19-minute runtime promise a mature experience.
Stars Reflect on the Reunion
At the premiere, Hemsworth spoke about the shift in dynamics. As shared by PA Media on X, he described their past work as 'like a couple of kids mucking around at school' before noting the tension in this role.

Berry, 59, connected with her character's age-related struggles. 'This is a woman that's very close to me, being a woman of a certain age and feeling like at this certain age the world is trying to diminish me in some way,' she said. Ruffalo praised the script's intelligence, a departure from blockbuster fare. The cast's reflections highlight the film's appeal beyond action.
With the film set to open widely on 12 February 2026, early buzz suggests it could appeal to fans beyond Marvel enthusiasts. As of 30 January 2026, tickets are selling briskly in the UK, indicating strong interest in seeing Thor and Hulk face off in Crime 101's tense narrative.
