Tom Felton Called Rupert Grint 'Straight Away' and Is 'So Excited' for His 'Harry Potter' Return

Tom Felton has revealed he phoned former 'Harry Potter' co‑star Rupert Grint 'immediately' after hearing Grint would return as Ron Weasley in 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' on Broadway, saying he is 'so excited' to see him back in the role.

Grint will step into the New York production in February 2027 for a 17‑week run, following Felton's own turn as an adult Draco Malfoy.

Felton, who played Draco Malfoy throughout the original eight‑film franchise, said he was thrilled to see Grint step back into the role that made him famous. Grint is set to join the Broadway production in February 2027, following Felton's own return as an adult Draco Malfoy.

Tom Felton Welcomes Rupert Grint's Return

Felton admitted that he was so thrilled when he learned about Grint's casting that he contacted his fellow 'Harry Potter' star right away. 'We are typically – and he will agree with me – pretty bad at our phone game, but when I heard the news I called him immediately and I'm so excited for him,' he admitted in an interview.

'Who doesn't want to see Rupert Grint play Ron Weasley again? Come on!' he added. Felton's comments come as both actors prepare to revisit characters they first played as children more than two decades ago.

Grint portrayed Ron across all eight 'Harry Potter' films, beginning with 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' in 2001.

His return to the role on Broadway will mark the first time he has played Ron since the film series concluded with 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2' in 2011.

The Broadway production of 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' is set 19 years after the events of the original story.

Grint will therefore play an adult version of Ron, who is now a father. The actor is scheduled to perform at New York's Lyric Theatre for a 17‑week run from 2 February to 30 May 2027.

Grint said his return felt particularly meaningful because Ron had been part of his life since he was 11. He described stepping back into the character as both familiar and new, particularly as he and Ron have both entered fatherhood.

Felton Says Grint Does Not Need His Advice

Although Felton has already experienced the transition from 'Harry Potter' film star to stage actor, he said Grint does not need advice from him.

When asked whether he had offered his former co‑star any guidance, Felton laughed and pointed out that Grint had already performed on Broadway. Grint made his Broadway debut in 2014 in 'It's Only a Play'. Felton instead joked that he might be the one taking advice from Grint.

The pair have remained friends since meeting on the 'Harry Potter' set. Felton described Grint, Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson as 'best mates' and 'family', although their busy lives now make it difficult for all four former co‑stars to spend time together.

Tom Felton's Draco Malfoy Return

Felton became the first member of the original 'Harry Potter' film cast to reprise his role in 'Cursed Child' when he began playing adult Draco on Broadway in November 2025. His limited run was later extended, and he will perform through January 2027.

However, fans will not get to see Felton and Grint share the Broadway stage as Draco and Ron. Felton's run ends in January, while Grint begins his 17‑week engagement on 2 February.

Felton's return has helped pave the way for Grint to revisit the Wizarding World. The two actors will now join the original film cast as the latest to bring their characters back to life on stage.

With Grint preparing to put on Ron's robes once again, Felton appears to be among those most pleased to see it happen. As he put it, there is little question that audiences will want to see Rupert Grint play Ron Weasley again.
