Nancy Guthrie Kidnapping: How Her Disappearance Ignited a New Era of Online Sleuth Influencers
The role of online sleuths in high-profile missing person cases

Nancy Guthrie has not yet been found. The 84-year-old mother of talk show host Savannah Guthrie went missing weeks ago, and her entire family has launched several campaigns to bring her home. Most recently, Savannah told her Instagram followers that her family will offer a $1 million reward to anyone who can provide information about Nancy's disappearance. Several people have come forward, but none of their tips has yet brought Nancy home.
Last week marked a turning point in the ongoing investigation after authorities acknowledged the possibility that Nancy may no longer be alive. No body has yet been found, however, and Savannah and her two siblings recently visited their mother's home in Tucson, Arizona. On her Instagram account, she urged her followers not to stop praying with them.
A New Era of Online Sleuth Influencers
Several people have not only continued praying for Nancy's safe return — some have also flocked to the area around her home, recording videos to share with their viewers online. According to reports, Nancy's disappearance has ignited a new era of online sleuth influencers drawn to true crime. Some spend several hours camping outside the property to capture and broadcast the latest developments.
Allie Barto, a true crime enthusiast, told the publication that she spends most of her time online waiting for updates about the case. She watches continuous coverage produced by various influencers and, as a result, knows minute details, including, for instance, when Nancy's pool cleaners last visited the house.
Barto, who has watched crime shows avidly since she was a teenager, said that more women tune in to this type of programme, especially when it involves celebrities. 'As women, we need to be concerned with crime. We need to look out for red flags in our partners, who are most often the perpetrators of this stuff,' she said.
Women and Boundaries Crossed
True crime TikTok influencer Nick Snipe echoed Barto's sentiments, saying that most of the people who watch his videos are women. Crime sleuthing has now become his main source of income, with his profile rising after he was invited to discuss a high-profile murder case on television.
While crime sleuthing may be informative for some, it has also caused a divide. Some influencers covering Nancy's disappearance have crossed clear boundaries and shown little regard for her family's privacy. Others who were asked to leave the premises have decided to stay there. There was also one influencer who ordered takeout food outside Nancy's home despite authorities informing him that this wasn't allowed.
Crime sleuths can also cause serious harm by naming individuals as suspects without clear evidence. This happened to Dominic Evans after his name was linked to Nancy's disappearance. He told reporters that his life became a nightmare after he was accused of wrongdoing by online sleuths.
The appetite for true crime coverage shows no sign of diminishing, and for many influencers, it has become a significant livelihood. That makes credible, responsible reporting all the more essential, particularly for those with large online followings.
