Since founder Jack Dorsey sent out the first tweet on 21 March 2006, Twitter has revolutionised the way we use the internet. Designed by Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass, and initially named 'twttr', the social media site has now become one of the most important companies in the world.

Growing rapidly over the past decade, in 2010 the site could boast of 50 million tweets being sent each day. By 2013, when the site filed their initial public offering, they claimed that had grown to 500 million.

But despite this rapid growth, and user base of over 320 million across the globe, Twitter has run into trouble in recent years. According to a Form 10-k annual report filed by Twitter, the site has lost $2.09bn (£1.44bn, €1.85bn) since the launch. The report claimed, "We have incurred significant operating losses in the past, and we may not be able to achieve or subsequently maintain profitability".
