Selena Gomez reportedly celebrated her birthday in the absence of The Weeknd as he was on his European leg of his Starboy world tour.

The Canadian singer, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, is apparently upset he could not celebrate his girlfriend's special day. The Weeknd has, however, said that he is going to make it up to her by throwing a surprise birthday party when he returns to Los Angeles.

"Abel [Tesfaye] was bummed he couldn't celebrate Selena [Gomez]'s birthday with her on the big day, but he was in Paris performing," a source close to The Weeknd told HollywoodLife.

Despite his busy schedule, The Weeknd, 27, did not forget to wish The Same Old Love hitmaker on her birthday. She turned 25 years old on 22 July, and the couple indulged in a face-to-face conversation via the internet.

"They Skyped together though, and he sent her an amazing bunch of flowers with a beautiful note. He's flying back today though, and he has some time off now, as his next performance isn't until August," the source said.

The Weeknd is said to be planning to spoil his girlfriend with a "romantic dinner date" and has even hired a private chef to make the occasion a night to remember.

He has also bought "a whole load of beautiful gifts" for Gomez. "Selena is Abel's everything, and he wants her to have the best birthday ever," the source said.

Media reports had earlier speculated that the two might be heading to Paris to celebrate her special day.

"He's taking her on a surprise vacation," the source had said. "She has no idea where they are going but he has a break in his tour and has told her he's taking her somewhere. She's super excited!"
