Not all heroes wear capes—some are just trying to do the shopping.

Derrick Perry, a former Marine and father from Traverse City, Michigan, became an overnight hero after risking his life to stop a violent stabbing spree at a local Walmart.

His quick thinking and fearless response helped subdue the attacker long before police arrived, drawing widespread praise from authorities and the public alike.

The incident unfolded on 26 July 2025, when chaos erupted inside the store as a man began stabbing customers at random.

Eleven people were injured, and panic quickly spread throughout the aisles. But while most shoppers ran for safety, Perry moved toward the danger. Armed with nothing but instinct, experience and courage, he took action that likely saved lives.

Who Is Derrick Perry?

Derrick Perry is a 41-year-old Traverse City resident, a former Marine with a background in security training. On that Saturday, he was shopping with his family when the violence began.

Witnesses say Perry didn't hesitate. He used a store shelf for cover before tackling the suspect and restraining him, even shouting for the attacker to drop his weapons—a folding knife and a small concealed firearm.

His military training allowed him to remain calm under pressure, and his actions prevented further injuries. Perry, who has adult children, is known locally as a steady and community-minded individual. Now, he's also known as a hero.

A Community Rallies Around Its Hero

One witness told Mint: 'He didn't even hesitate. Everyone was running away, but Derrick ran toward the danger.'

The account was just one of many that quickly circulated online, turning Perry into a symbol of bravery and selflessness.

Traverse City Police Chief Lauren Gilbert praised Perry's decisive action, saying, 'Had he not stepped in when he did, the situation could've turned much worse. He likely saved lives.'

Sheriff Michael Shea echoed that sentiment, calling the intervention 'remarkable' and expressing gratitude to Perry and other bystanders who helped restrain the suspect.

According to the New York Post, Perry's daughter posted on social media expressing pride in her father, while community members called him a 'true hero'.

Even Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement acknowledging the attack and extending thoughts to the victims and the entire community.

Perry to Receive Community Hero Award

In recognition of his courage, city officials plan to honour Perry with a Community Hero Award. The announcement has been met with overwhelming public support, as neighbours and residents rally around him with messages of thanks and admiration.

Officials have also requested privacy for Perry and other witnesses as they recover from the traumatic experience.

Perry has yet to make a public statement, but the impact of his actions is already resonating far beyond his hometown.

Suspect Faces Terrorism and Assault Charges

The alleged attacker has been identified as 42-year-old Bradford James Gille of Michigan. He has been charged with one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder.

The victims, ranging in age from 21 to 84, included a Walmart employee. Police confirmed that the attack appeared to be random.

Gille was apprehended at the scene, thanks in large part to Perry's intervention and the assistance of other bystanders. The investigation remains ongoing, and the motive behind the assault is still under review.

Why Derrick Perry's Story Matters

In the face of danger, Derrick Perry responded with extraordinary courage. His decision to run toward violence instead of away from it helped stop a deadly attack and protected countless lives.

For Traverse City, he represents not just a hero, but the power of training, instinct and humanity in moments of crisis.

His story is a reminder that heroism can come in an instant—and sometimes from the most unexpected places.
