Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is America's highest paid female chief executive, according to a USA TODAY analysis of data from S&P Capital IQ and Bespoke Investment Group.

Mayer earns $42.1m (£27.8m, €37.8m) a year in total compensation, and is also the seventh highest paid CEO in the country.

Safra Ada Catz of Oracle is the second highest-paid female CEO with $37.7m, followed by Lockheed Martin's Marillyn Hewson with an annual pay packet of $33.7m.

Carol Meyrowitz of off-price retailer TJX is number four on the list with an annual pay package of $28.7m, and Pepsico's Indira Nooyi completes the top five list with $22.5m annual pay.

The analysis also found that female CEOs now trump their male counterparts in pay. During the latest fiscal year, female CEOs in the S&P 500 earned an average of $18.8m, exceeding the $12.7m average paid to the 455 male CEOs listed.
