50 Cent is facing up to five years in prison after allegedly attacking an ex-girlfriend and trashing her apartment.

The rapper turned businessman is accused of breaking into Daphne Joy's home in Toluca Lake, California, kicking her and causing over $7,000 (£4,600) of damage to her property.

It is alleged that the 37-year-old, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, broke chandeliers, furniture, a TV and a lamp.

Joy, who is the mother of one of his children, told police that she hid in her bathroom.

According to legal papers obtained by TMZ, he has been charged with domestic violence and vandalism.

City attorney Mike Feuer said: "Regardless of perceived celebrity or notoriety, domestic violence is a serious crime and alleged perpetrators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law by this office.

"We will continue to look out for the safety of all victims of domestic violence and seek justice for the alleged crimes."

Jackson dated Joy for three years and the model gave birth to his second child in 2012.

50 Cent is scheduled to appear in court on 22 July and could be sentenced to five years in jail and $46,000 (£30,112) in fines.
