Mikhail Kalashnikov, inventor of the world's most popular fire arm, the AK-47 or Avtomat Kalashnikova model 1947, passed away today.

His invention went on to become the world's most popular assault rifle, enjoying application in the hands of thousands of soldiers, police, drug runners and terrorists across the globe. Apart from simply influencing warfare, the weapon had a powerful cultural impact as well.

The AK-47 found a place in music, countless movies, and hundreds of video games. It is worth noting that the rifle is present in hundreds of first person shooter video games.

As a tribute to Kalashnikov, we take a look at five of the most popular video games that allowed players to flaunt the Ak-47.

Counter Strike 1.6

Exclusive to the game's "terrorist" side, the AK-47 is easily one of the most sought after weapon in the game. Trusted by pros for its amazing accuracy and power, the AK-47 is extremely accurate for the first three to four shots, after which it needs to be rested for a second or so to avoid inaccuracy owing to recoil. Easily one of the most efficient rifles in Counter Strike. It is worth noting that very few other games have a more authentic sounding AK-47.

Far Cry 2

The AK-47 is a primary weapon in Far Cry 2. Players can get their hands on the rifle right after the second weapon shop mission in Act 1. Apart from the regular rifle, there are 8 golden AK-47s hidden in the game, and they have always been every Far Cry player's mystical unicorn.

Call of Duty 4

The most frequent weapon used by the in-game enemies, such as Ultranationalists and OpFor militants. The game uses a more modern and refined version of the rifle, with the result being that players enjoy better accuracy and lower amounts of recoil. The game has one of the best modern iterations of the AK-47.

GTA San Andreas

GTA San Andreas can pride itself on having a very nice modern day version of the gun. It sounds good, kills good and even offers life-like recoil with some realistic cross-hair jumps. Easily one of the best weapons to wield if you're walking into a challenging mission.

Max Payne 2

Very few shooter-game moments are as memorable as flying through the air in the slow motion style bullet-time mode while slamming rounds from an AK-47 into helpless enemies. An essential childhood memory for the 90's child.
