Lewes set to burn Alex Salmond in effigy on Bonfire Night Reuters

Alex Salmond looks set to pay for his Scottish independence campaigning by being burnt in flames in the "bonfire capital" of Britain, tonight.

A photo of an effigy of the former Scottish National Party leader has been leaked, ahead of Guy Fawkes Night celebrations in Lewes, East Sussex.

The city of Lewes regularly causes a stir on Guy Fawkes Night by burning effigies of public figures.

The unkind likeness makes the fighter for Scottish independence look a lot like Humpty Dumpty.

And being Scottish, Salmond obviously comes wrapped in the coils of the Loch Ness Monster - who is wearing an amusing Tom o'Shanter hat.

The spectacle of his own likeness go down in flames like his independence dream might be painful, but Salmond is in exalted company.

Other whose likenesses were burned by residents of Lewes, include German chancellor Angela Merkel - whose effigy sported a Nazi salute and also Osama Bin Laden.
