Trump TV Sparks Outrage as Critics Say White House Media Ban Is Bid To Control Narrative

Donald Trump's White House has launched a 24/7 streaming channel days after banning CNN, MS NOW and POLITICO from the White House, prompting critics to question whether the media restrictions and the new Trump TV project are connected.

The launch followed a breakdown in the White House television press pool, which left Trump's remarks at a Monday event without usable audio on the shared feed.

While the administration promoted Trump TV as a central place for presidential footage and announcements, online critics questioned whether it was intended to reduce reliance on independent news organisations.

Aaron Parnas Reacts to Trump TV After White House Media Ban

TikToker and lawyer Aaron Parnas was among those reacting to the launch. In a TikTok post, Parnas said he was surprised to return online after a 25-hour absence and find that the US president had launched Trump TV.

He characterised the channel as state-run media funded by US taxpayers and highlighted its 24/7 stream, which features previous Trump moments, administration announcements and other content in one place.

Parnas also linked the launch to the White House's escalating confrontation with major media organisations, pointing out that Trump had announced a ban on three outlets earlier that day. He questioned the timing of Trump TV's arrival following the administration's latest restrictions on press access.

Trump announced on 18 September that CNN, MS NOW and POLITICO would be barred from the White House. Staff from the three organisations were subsequently turned away from the White House on 19 September.

Social Media Users Question Whether Trump Planned Trump TV

Parnas' post prompted comments from other TikTok users who questioned whether the media ban had been connected to plans for Trump TV.

Some alleged there was an 'ulterior motive', such as an attempt to control the narrative about the Trump administration, while others suggested the launch had been anticipated before the three organisations were excluded from the White House.

Other commenters compared the idea with North Korea, using phrases such as 'North Kormerica' and asking, 'If not North Korea, why North Korea shaped?' North Korea operates a tightly controlled state media system, with major broadcast outlets under government control and KCNA serving as the country's state news agency.

Some users also called for people not to watch Trump TV, with comments urging others to avoid giving the channel an audience.

Trump TV Viewership Drops Below 1,000

Trump TV officially launched on Monday, 21 September 2026 at 7:00 p.m. ET. The channel immediately faced scrutiny over its initial audience figures.

According to The Daily Beast, Trump TV 'immediately flopped'. It launched at about 8,000 viewers, but the audience fell below 4,000 after 90 minutes and was around 3,000 by 9pm ET. By approximately 10:40 p.m., the audience had fallen to 2,425 viewers despite the White House YouTube account having 3.18 million followers.

The Daily Beast reported that the stream later reached about 1,123 viewers at 3:30 a.m. while showing an older speech, before dipping below 1,000 viewers during another archived address.

The figures provide an early indication of the stream's audience, although they represent its initial performance rather than a long-term audience assessment.

Trump TV Launch Follows White House Press Pool Dispute

The media ban had immediate consequences for presidential coverage. ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC suspended the shared television pool after CNN was removed from its scheduled rotation, meaning there was no replacement for the normal pooled coverage.

At Monday's White House event, footage circulated showing Trump speaking but without usable audio from the shared feed. The disruption did not mean no recording of Trump existed, as independent organisations could still capture their own footage and sound, but the usual pooled broadcast feed was unavailable.

The White House subsequently launched 'TRUMP TV: The Essentials Station', a 24-hour YouTube stream featuring Trump speeches, administration announcements and archived footage. The launch came as the three banned outlets pursued legal action over their exclusion from the White House.
