How the Grinch Stole Christmas, a holiday film based on the 1957 children's book by Dr Seuss, tells the story of the Grinch, a bitter, green character who attempts to ruin Christmas for the people of Whoville. When the live action came out in 2000 starring Jim Carrey, it was a smash hit, making an impact that has stood the test of time through the decades. Now, 26 years later, people are still asking: 'Are we getting a sequel?'

While no definitive statements have been released, those closest to the project say nothing is currently moving forward.

Taylor Momsen Addresses Sequel Questions

While attending Steven Tyler's 7th annual Jam for Janie Grammys watch party, Momsen was asked directly whether a sequel was in development. Speaking to The Post, the 32-year-old said there were no plans that she was aware of. She added that some projects are best left untouched, describing the original film as a timeless classic that has endured.

Despite dismissing the idea of any current plans, Momsen has not fully ruled out returning under the right circumstances. In November, she acknowledged that if Jim Carrey were to approach her about another project, she would listen. The comment followed a public reunion between the two at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Reflecting on seeing Carrey again, Momsen described the moment as surreal and unexpected. She noted that the last time they had seen each other was roughly 25 years earlier, during the original film's production.

Honouring The Film's Anniversary

In December, Momsen and her band The Pretty Reckless re-recorded Where Are You Christmas? to mark the film's 25th anniversary. Momsen was just seven years old when the film came out, and the song became closely associated with the film. Somehow, the rerecorded track expanded into a larger musical project after time in the studio led to additional recordings. Momsen explained that the emotional weight and nostalgia attached to the original song made it difficult to treat it as a standalone release.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in November, Momsen said recording the song as a child had a lasting effect on her career. She described it as her first real experience inside a professional studio environment. That experience later shaped her long-term relationship with music and recording spaces.

Memories From The Set

In interviews marking the anniversary, Momsen also shared memories from filming. She recalled a sled scene that involved a real prop mounted on a large spring, moving aggressively during filming. At one point, she nearly fell, prompting Carrey to stop filming and check on her.

Momsen said Carrey was highly protective of her during production. She described him as animated and over the top on camera but attentive and careful with her off camera. She added that she always felt safe working alongside him and enjoyed being around him on set.

Carrey's Own Comments On Sequels

Jim Carrey addressed sequel talk in 2024, responding to repeated questions from fans. He joked that the constant requests made him want to find a way to stop sequels altogether.

As of now, no sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas has been announced or confirmed. Taylor Momsen has stated clearly that nothing is in development to her knowledge.

Released at the turn of the century, How the Grinch Stole Christmas starred Jim Carrey as the green, grouchy title character and featured Taylor Momsen as Cindy Lou Who. The movie has since remained a seasonal fixture, frequently referenced as one of the defining Christmas releases of its era.
