A bizarre timeline from 2013 has emerged following the latest release of Jeffrey Epstein files, showing Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates launched a high-profile initiative for pleasure-enhancing condoms just months before the disgraced financier penned emails alleging the billionaire was seeking antibiotics for a sexually transmitted disease. In March 2013, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced a $100,000 (£80,000) grant challenge to anyone who could develop a 'next generation condom that significantly preserves or enhances pleasure'.

Four months later, in July 2013, Epstein wrote a series of draft emails to himself making explosive claims about Gates. The emails, released by the US Department of Justice last Friday, alleged that Gates had contracted an STD following 'sex with Russian girls' and sought to give his then-wife, Melinda, antibiotics without her knowledge. Gates' spokesperson has categorically rejected the claims as 'absolutely absurd and completely false'.

Gates Denies All Allegations

A spokesperson for Gates told media outlets that the documents only demonstrate 'Epstein's frustration that he did not have an ongoing relationship with Gates and the lengths he would go to entrap and defame'. The emails were written from the perspective of Boris Nikolic, Gates' longtime science adviser, but were never sent to anyone. Epstein drafted at least seven versions of the messages and sent them only to his own email account.

'To add insult to injury you then implore me to please delete the emails regarding your STD, your request that I provide you antibiotics that you can surreptitiously give to Melinda, and the description of your penis', one email read, supposedly in Nikolic's voice.

The Condom Initiative's Serious Purpose

When Gates announced the condom challenge in spring 2013, the stated goal was deadly serious. The foundation's Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative sought new materials, designs, and packaging to encourage regular condom use, particularly in developing nations where HIV transmission remained a critical public health concern.

By November 2013, the foundation had selected 11 finalists, each receiving $100,000 (£80,000) grants with the possibility of up to $1 million (£800,000) in additional funding. The winning designs included everything from self-lubricating condoms with nanoparticle coatings to polyethylene wraps that clung like cling film, and even condoms made from graphene, the ultra-strong crystalline carbon.

Epstein's Troubling Claims

The Epstein emails paint a dramatically different picture of Gates' interest in sexual health that year. In the draft messages, Epstein claimed Nikolic had helped Gates obtain drugs to 'deal with the consequences of sex with Russian girls' and participated in arrangements that ranged 'from the morally inappropriate, to the ethically unsound'.

Another draft email appeared as a resignation letter, with Epstein writing as Nikolic: 'In my role as his right hand I had been asked on multiple occasions and in hindsight, wrongly acquiesced into participating in things that have ranged from the morally inappropriate, to the ethically unsound and had been repeatedly asked to do other things that get near and potentially over the line into the illegal'. The emails also suggested Epstein believed he held compromising material that could damage Gates' philanthropic reputation. Nikolic has not publicly commented on the emails.

Ex-Wife Breaks Silence

Melinda French Gates, who divorced Bill Gates in 2021 after 27 years of marriage, has now spoken publicly about the latest file release. She described feeling 'unbelievable sadness' about the allegations. 'For me, it's personally hard whenever those details come up, right? Because it brings back memories of some very, very painful times in my marriage', French Gates said.

French Gates has previously stated that Bill's meetings with Epstein were a factor in her decision to divorce. In 2022, she told 'CBS Mornings' that she met Epstein once and immediately regretted it. 'He was abhorrent. He was evil personified. I had nightmares about it afterwards'.

Understanding the Unverified Claims

The documents released by the DOJ form part of more than three million pages collected during various investigations into Epstein, who died in jail in 2019 whilst awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Officials have repeatedly stressed that these files include raw submissions, drafts, and unproven allegations that were never verified or acted upon.

The timing of the two 2013 events has raised eyebrows online, though there is no evidence connecting Gates' philanthropic condom initiative to the personal allegations Epstein made months later. Gates has acknowledged his association with Epstein was 'a huge mistake'. In a January 2025 interview, he said: 'In retrospect, I was foolish to spend any time with him. So yes, I think I was quite stupid'.

The Epstein files continue to raise questions about the relationships powerful men maintained with the convicted sex offender. As more documents emerge, the full nature of Gates' relationship with Epstein remains under scrutiny, even as Gates' representatives maintain the billionaire never engaged in any improper behaviour.
