At least 28 people are feared killed in a deadly attack on a bus in Kenya by suspected militants belonging to the Somali Islamist group al-Shabaab.

The attack took place in Arabiya area in Mandera county, located near the Somalia border, when heavily armed militants stormed a Nairobi-bound bus.

"I can confirm to you that there was an unfortunate incident this morning where about 27 innocent travellers were killed by unknown militia. We are now in the preparation of sending security reinforcement, medical staff and ambulance to retrieve and transport the bodies of the deceased to Mandera town. Military are already there to pursue the heartless killers," local government official Elvis Korir was quoted as saying.

The bus was stopped and non-Muslims were isolated and killed.
