Carly Rae Jepsen has revealed why she parted ways with former manager Scooter Braun, saying she wanted a less mainstream creative path and the freedom to 'let my freak flag fly.' Her explanation has resurfaced as Braun is reportedly becoming more involved in Sydney Sweeney's career following the actress' move to CAA and wider changes to her professional team.

Jepsen discussed her former management relationship with Braun in a new Hollywood Reporter interview, saying they ultimately had different ideas about the direction of her career.

'I knew that I was on a different journey than he understood,' Jepsen said. She explained that she wanted to do something 'a little bit less mainstream' and liked what Braun had offered, but no longer felt it was what she wanted.

'I felt like it was just going to be a little bit easier to shake hands, walk away and go let my freak flag fly, so to speak', she said.

Jepsen also revealed that she 'took one of his employees' with her when she left. She said she is now happier with her management team and has more freedom to explore creatively.

The singer added that she would not say she had complete agency at the beginning of her career, but stressed that it was not because her team was deliberately trying to take it away.

'But I didn't know how to take it,' Jepsen said.

Jepsen's Scooter Braun Exit Happened Before 2023

Jepsen's comments provide new context for a professional split that occurred years before it resurfaced publicly. Jepsen had not been managed by Braun since 2016, according to a spokesperson who clarified her status during the 2023 reports about his clients.

Her situation was therefore different from that of the artists whose departures from Braun were being reported in 2023. Her latest interview instead provides a clearer explanation of a decision made years earlier.

Jepsen has since continued pursuing a broader creative career. She is preparing to release Day and Night on 18 September and is also working on music for the Broadway adaptation of 10 Things I Hate About You.

Sydney Sweeney's Career Shift Brings Braun Into Focus

Jepsen's comments arrive as Braun is reportedly taking a more prominent role in Sweeney's professional decisions. Sweeney recently signed with Creative Artists Agency after spending much of 2026 without an acting agent. The move followed the departure of longtime agent Jennifer Millar from Paradigm for Brillstein.

Puck reported that Braun arranged a dinner between Sweeney and CAA agent Kevin Huvane, citing five sources, and said the meeting helped lead to her CAA signing. Braun declined to comment, while another source disputed the suggestion that Millar had been bypassed, saying she and her producing partner were already familiar with CAA's courtship.

The CAA move comes as Sweeney continues expanding beyond acting through producing and other business ventures. Her changing representation therefore forms part of a broader shift in how she is managing her career.

The report said sources had also described Braun as becoming more involved in Sweeney's wider career strategy, including branding, endorsement opportunities and public relations decisions.
