A teacher in India's Delhi has died after being stabbed by two Grade 12 students on Monday, 26 September. The incident happened in the evening when the students of a government senior secondary school, located at Nangloi area in west Delhi, were writing an exam.

Fifty-five-year-old Mukesh Kumar, who taught Hindi at the school, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, but succumbed to injuries on Tuesday morning. Kumar had been stabbed multiple times.

Both the accused students have been detained. One of them is 18, while the other is a minor. A case under section 307 (attempt to murder) under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at Nangloi police station against the two, the police investigating the case have said.

Reports say one of the two students was expelled from the school in September for poor attendance. On Monday, he arrived at school and barged into the classroom to confront Kumar. He was joined by another student and a heated argument later, the teacher was stabbed by the students.

"It seems the students were outraged by the rustication," a police officer said.

A teacher, who witnessed the crime, said, "I was submitting exam sheets ...suddenly I heard some noise and saw two children running. When I went there I saw Mukeshji was bleeding ...we immediately took him to hospital."

Teachers of the school have taken out a march to protest against Kumar's killing and to demand more security. They gathered outside the school demanding action against the accused, compensation for the victim's family and a quick probe into the incident. They have alleged being threatened by students who were punished either for their poor performance in exams or for lack of attendance.

Condemning the incident, CP Singh, president of Government School Teachers' Association, said: "This is a shocking incident that raises concerns on the safety of teachers inside the school. The students were carrying arms and they entered inside easily."

The incident comes close on the heels of a female teacher, Karuna, being stabbed to death in Delhi by her stalker. The 21-year-old was on her way to work when she was attacked on 20 September. She was reported to have been stabbed over 30 times even as bystanders watched without intervening.
