Amir Khan with Georgia Toffolo on I'm A Celeb ITV

It's no wonder Amir Khan doesn't have a clue what he signed up for on I'm A Celebrity, because the British boxer must have pounced on the pay cheque before he realised what a Bushtucker Trial was.

The 30-year-old former unified light-welterweight world champion from Bolton is reportedly the highest-paid contestant in the show's history.

Khan beats out Katie Price's record fee for the ITV show by cashing in an eye-watering £400,000 just for entering the jungle, which explains why he has never watched the show and has no idea what he has let himself in for.

A source told The Sun: "Amir was a great get, but he came at a hefty cost. He's going to be the best-paid celeb they've ever had.

"There have been rumours of huge sums being paid to the celebrities but they're often highly exaggerated."

"Katie Price got somewhere close, but Amir's is slightly higher again. He's a huge name in sport and current after his recent marriage problems," they added.

The newspaper reports that campmates are usually paid anything between £25K and £250K.

Khan's fee is considerably higher due to his status as a high-profile sportsman with a very dramatic personal life that has been covered widely by the media. The boxer has been at the centre of a family feud and split from his 26-year-old pregnant wife, Faryal Makhdoom.

Back in August, Khan announced that he was divorcing his wife on Twitter, stating: "Thanks to Faryal for clearing up the accusations she had made about my family in the past which were false."

He added: "Unfortunately it didn't work out between Me and Faryal and we are still going ahead with the divorce. We are in good talking terms.

"We have to think about our daughter Lamaisah who I will always be there for. I wish Faryal all the very best for the future."

Khan has since rekindled his relationship with Makhdoom, declaring the couple had sorted out "all the issues" via an Instagram post.

Makhdoom has shown her support for her husband on Twitter, tweeting earlier this week: "Excited for tonight's episode @imacelebrity these trials are not easy we're all rooting for you @amirkingkhan #ImACelebrity #itv".

But after he failed his first Bushtucker Trial with Georgia "Toff" Toffolo after freaking out over a python, she admitted: "I don't think my hubby @amirkingkhan realizes what he got himself into #ImaCelebrity @ITV".

I'm A Celeb continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
