After nearly a decade in development, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation's long-awaited holiday film Margie Claus is moving ahead, with a confirmed release date of 5 November 2027. Originally conceived as a live-action festive comedy, the project has now been reimagined as an animated musical featuring Melissa McCarthy in the title role.

Comedian and writer Cole Escola has joined the voice cast as a new character named Levi, the head elf. The casting was announced in a video posted to McCarthy's social media accounts, marking a major update in a project that had remained dormant for several years.

Escola and McCarthy Confirm Roles in Festive Teaser

In the promotional clip, McCarthy and Escola appear in balloon-covered Christmas gowns, joking about their matching outfits. Escola, dressed in green to complement McCarthy's red ensemble, joins the actress in playful banter, hinting at the comedic tone viewers can expect. Escola, who recently won a Tony Award for their autobiographical stage show Oh, Mary!, brings both comedic and theatrical experience to the production, according to Animation Magazine. Margie Claus was first announced in 2017 with a planned 2019 release under New Line Cinema. Initially set to be a live-action film directed by McCarthy's husband and frequent collaborator Ben Falcone, the project was shelved amid production delays and has since undergone significant creative changes, according to The Wrap.

Under the direction of Kirk DeMicco, known for The Croods and Vivo, the film has been redeveloped in animated format. The original screenplay, co-written by Falcone and Damon Jones, has reportedly been updated to reflect the new tone and format. Warner Bros. has now confirmed a full theatrical release, establishing a clear timeline after years of uncertainty.

Storyline Centres on Holiday Rescue Mission

Broadway World reported the film opens on Christmas Eve when Santa Claus goes missing. In his absence, Margie Claus must take the reins, leading a rescue mission with the help of a group of retired reindeer. Escola's character Levi acts as her loyal assistant and head elf, guiding the operation with humour and heart.

The film is being produced by On the Day Productions, the company founded by McCarthy and Falcone. Michelle Wong, who recently worked on K-Pop: Demon Hunters, is also attached as a producer.
