41-Year-Old Man Faces Multiple Charges After Installing Hidden Camera Inside Employee Restroom

A 41-year-old Florida man has been arrested in Delaware after police discovered a concealed camera inside an employee bathroom at a Laurel business.

The Laurel Police Department said officers were called to the business in the 200 block of East Front Street on 8 September after an employee reported finding a small camera inside a staff restroom.

Officers located the device on a shelf beside the toilet and confiscated it as part of their investigation. Police then sought to determine who had placed the camera there and whether it had been used to record people inside the bathroom.

The department did not identify the business or the employee who reported the discovery. The case was detailed in a police press release issued on 11 September. Investigators interviewed employees and carried out further enquiries before identifying the person they believe owned the camera.

Police Identify Anil Weiler

Investigators identified Anil Weiler, 41, of Florida, as the apparent owner of the device, according to police. Authorities confirmed that Weiler was an employee at the business where the camera was discovered. Police have not disclosed his position, how long he had worked there or other details about his employment.

Weiler was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of violation of privacy. The offences are classified as Class G felonies under Delaware law. The charges relate to the discovery of the concealed camera inside the employee restroom, where staff would reasonably expect to have privacy. Police have not disclosed further details about the circumstances behind the alleged recording.

Police have not publicly disclosed what the device may have recorded, whether any footage was recovered or how long it had allegedly been in the bathroom. It also remains unclear whether investigators have identified the individuals linked to the two privacy charges.

He was later released on an unsecured $3,000 (£2,230) bond. An unsecured bond allows a defendant to be released without paying the full amount upfront, although the defendant can become liable for the sum if the conditions of release are violated.

A no-contact order was also issued. Police have not released further details about the restrictions imposed under the order.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged placement of the camera and are appealing for information.
