Frank Ocean has revealed why he opened up about his sexuality

Frank Ocean said he broke down in tears after revealing in a Tumblr post that his first love was a man.

The US singer and rapper made headlines in the summer when he became the first male hip-hop star to open up about his sexual orientation.

In the latest issue of GQ magazine, Ocean recalled the night he chose to finally address mounting speculation. He also discussed how his life had changed since.

"I was just like, 'F**k it. Talk about it, don't talk about it - talk about this'. No more mystery. Through with that," he said.

"The night I posted it, I cried like a baby. It was like all the frequency just clicked to a change in my head. All the receptors were now receiving a different signal, and I was happy," he told GQ.

"I hadn't been happy in so long. I've been sad again since but it's a totally different take on sad. There's just some magic in truth and honesty and openness."

A string of celebrities rallied in support of his admission including Beyonce and Russell Simmons and praised his courage.

The 24-year-old Odd Future crooner went on to slam reports that his decision to use an intimate blog post to make the life-changing declaration was a publicity stunt ahead of the release of his new album, Channel Orange .

"Some people said, 'He's saying he fell in love with a guy for hype'. As if that's the best hype you can get in hip-hop or black music.

"So I knew that if I was going to say what I said, it had to be in concert with one of the most brilliant pieces of art of my generation. And that's what I did. Why can I say that? Why I don't have to affect all this humility and s**t is because I worked my ass off. I worked my face off."

He still refuses to be labelled, however.

"As a writer, as a creator, I'm giving you my experiences. Just take what I give you. You ain't got to pry beyond that. I'm giving you what I feel like you can feel. The other s**t you can't feel. You can't feel a box. You can't feel a label."
