Erling Haaland made Manchester City history on Wednesday, 14 October, becoming the club's all-time leading Champions League goalscorer despite suffering a 4-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad Stadium.

The Norwegian striker scored twice in the second half to surpass Sergio Agüero's record of 36 Champions League goals for City. However, his individual achievement could not prevent the reigning European champions from claiming an impressive away victory.

Haaland Breaks Sergio Agüero's Champions League Record

Haaland entered the match needing one goal to surpass Agüero's record, having already established himself among Europe's most prolific forwards.

His historic moment arrived in the 53rd minute when he headed home City's first goal, taking his Champions League tally for the club to 37.

The 26-year-old added another goal in the 75th minute, extending his City record to 38 goals in just 41 appearances in the competition. Agüero had scored 36 goals in 64 Champions League appearances for City, excluding three goals from a qualifying match against Steaua Bucharest in 2016.

Haaland's achievement is particularly remarkable considering he joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022.

He also reached 60 Champions League goals in his 60th appearance across his career, becoming the fastest player to achieve that milestone. His second goal against PSG increased his overall tally to 61.

For comparison, Lionel Messi needed 80 appearances to reach 60 goals in the competition.

PSG Spoil Haaland's Historic Night

Despite Haaland's record-breaking performance, Manchester City struggled to contain PSG during a difficult first half.

Désiré Doué opened the scoring in the 13th minute before Ousmane Dembélé doubled the visitors' advantage just two minutes later. Vitinha added a third in the 32nd minute, leaving City trailing 3-0 at half-time.

Haaland's header briefly revived hopes of a comeback, but Maghnes Akliouche restored PSG's three-goal advantage in the 62nd minute.

The Norwegian struck again with 15 minutes left, reducing City's deficit to 4-2.

The result marked City's first defeat in eight matches and handed head coach Enzo Maresca a difficult Champions League setback. Former City manager Pep Guardiola also watched from the stands on his first return to the Etihad since leaving the club.

What Haaland's Record Means for Manchester City

Haaland's latest milestone strengthens his position among the most prolific goalscorers in Champions League history. He previously won the competition with Manchester City in 2023, scoring 12 goals during the club's historic treble-winning campaign.

His scoring rate also highlights how quickly he has overtaken established club legends despite spending considerably less time in Manchester.

Yet Wednesday's defeat demonstrated that individual brilliance does not always translate into collective success. City registered 27 shots against PSG, but their second-half improvement came too late to overturn the damage inflicted before the interval.

The defeat leaves City with three points from their opening two Champions League fixtures, while PSG have collected six.

For Haaland, the record offers another landmark in an extraordinary career. For Manchester City, however, the immediate priority is ensuring their defensive problems do not undermine their European ambitions.

The result also raises questions about whether City's defensive vulnerabilities could become a recurring problem against Europe's strongest opponents.
