Harry Kane is reportedly close to extending his Bayern Munich contract until 2029, a development that would significantly reduce Manchester United's chances of signing him Harry Kane | Facebook

Harry Kane's potential Premier League homecoming has suffered a major setback after Bayern Munich reportedly reached a breakthrough in negotiations that could keep the England captain in Germany until 2029.

The 33-year-old has repeatedly been linked with Manchester United, but Bayern and Kane have reportedly reached an agreement in principle over extending his stay in Munich. Negotiations are moving towards their final stages, although the proposed contract has not yet been signed.

The development threatens to narrow one of the most discussed potential routes for Kane to return to the Premier League.

Bayern And Kane Reportedly Reach Breakthrough

Kane joined Bayern from Tottenham Hotspur in August 2023, and his existing contract runs until June 2027. The proposed extension would keep him at the Allianz Arena until 2029, when he would be 35 and approaching his 36th birthday.

Final details are still being clarified, and no date has been scheduled for Kane to put pen to paper. However, the direction of negotiations appears increasingly clear.

Kane said in September that their talks were 'going well' and that the two sides were 'pretty close' to reaching an agreement. 'I'm happy here,' he said, adding that he did not expect supporters to wait long for an announcement.

Bayern president Herbert Hainer has similarly made it clear that the German champions want Kane to stay at the club and believe an extension will happen.

A new agreement would also underline Bayern's determination to keep Kane at the centre of their attack rather than risk uncertainty developing as his existing contract approaches its final year.

Manchester United Route Begins To Narrow

United have long been linked with Kane, including before his departure from Tottenham in 2023.

Speculation surrounding a possible Old Trafford move resurfaced amid uncertainty over whether he would extend his Bayern contract.

A return to England would also offer Kane another opportunity to pursue Alan Shearer's Premier League scoring record. Kane left Tottenham with 213 Premier League goals, 47 short of Shearer's record of 260. But his performances in Germany have given him little reason to rush home.

Kane has established himself as Bayern's attacking focal point while collecting major domestic honours and continuing his remarkable scoring record.

He also became the fastest player to reach 100 Bundesliga goals, achieving the milestone in just 98 appearances.

Premier League Return Not Completely Dead

A 2029 agreement would make a Manchester United move considerably more difficult, but it would not necessarily eliminate every possibility of Kane returning to England.

The precise terms of the proposed contract remain important. Previous discussions around Kane's future have included contractual mechanisms that could potentially facilitate a return to England.

Until the final agreement is signed and its terms become clearer, a future Premier League move cannot be completely ruled out. For now, however, Kane appears increasingly likely to remain in Munich rather than make the long-discussed journey back to England.

Kane's contract situation had fuelled speculation about a possible Premier League return, including renewed links with Manchester United, but Bayern's breakthrough means that prospect is rapidly narrowing at this very moment.
