The Samsung Galaxy S2 continues to attract significant attention and acclaim, not only because it is an outstanding device in its own right but also because it seems to be the only smartphone to consistently give Apple's iPhone a stiff fight.

The eagerly anticipated successor to the Galaxy S2 - the Galaxy S3 - has received more than its fair share of rumours and speculations, ahead of the equally well-rumuored launch of the next iPhone model, tentatively titled iPhone 5.

The reports surrounding the Galaxy S3 hint at a July or August launch. However, rival smartphone maker HTC may just have trumped the South Korean giant, with the launch of the HTC One series that boasts similar specifications to those the Galaxy S3 is expected to sport.

Display: The HTC One X comes with a 4.7-inch 720x1280 pixels Super IPS LCD2 capacitive touch-screen display with 312 ppi pixel density. The Galaxy S3 has been spoken of featuring a 4.6-inch screen, the resolution of which was expected to be 720x1280. Now, however, it seems the device could have a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED Plus capacitive touch-screen display with a resolution of 1024 x 600.

Storage: TheHTC One X has 32GB storage and 1GB of RAM. Its rival is expected to feature in two models - with 16GB and 32Gb of onboard memory, along with a reported 2GB of RAM.

Camera: The HTC One X has an 8 megapixel 3264x2448 camera which can capture video at 1080p. The Galaxy S3, meanwhile, is expected to have a 12 megapixel 4000x3000 camera that should also be able to record at 1080p.

Processor: The HTX One X uses an NVidia Tegra 3 chipset and a 1.5GHz quad-core processor. The Galaxy S3 too is expected to use a quad-core processor but with the Samsung Exynos 4212 chipset. In addition, it could even be that Samsung offers the Galaxy S3 with a 1.8GHz processor.

Thickness: The HTC One X smartphone is 9.3mm thick. The Galaxy S3, on the other hand, varies in thickness, depending on which reports you believe in, from 7mm to 9mm.

The HTC One X will probably be released sometime in April - 60 days from the date of launch at the 2012 Mobile World Congress. Vodafone has announced it will be carrying both the One X and the One S in the UK and Amazon UK now lists the One X as being available for pre-order (due to be released, according to the Web site, on 5 April) and priced at £529.99.
