January 5 marks National Bird Day in the United Kingdom and across the world.

Since 1979 up to half a million people across the UK participate in the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds' annual Big Garden Birdwatch. The event encourages amateur naturalists to count the birds that make the UK their home.

While there has been a marked decline in bird numbers in recent years, our shores are still home to a wide variety of unusual and interesting species.
