Netizens React As Jim Carrey 'Clone' Theories Flood Online After Cesar Awards Appearance Screenshot/X

Jim Carrey has sparked a frenzy after a rare public appearance at the 51st César Awards in Paris on 26 February. The 64-year-old actor, who received an Honorary César Award, looked noticeably different from previous red-carpet photos, with fans immediately speculating about what might have changed. But was it really the 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective' star who stepped out on stage? A resurfaced interview has fuelled a different theory altogether, suggesting Carrey may have dusted off an old anti-paparazzi trick to fool the world.

Resurfaced Interview Revives Jim Carrey 'Decoy' Theory

An old interview on The Late Show with David Letterman has been posted on X and it shows Carrey revealing the best way to avoid paparazzi, or, as he calls them, 'stalker-razzi'. According to The Truman Show actor, he simply deploys a 'decoy' dressed to look like him to distract the photographers while he enjoys his day.

'I send him off in one direction, sucks all the press in that direction... and I can just have my day,' Carrey said.

He even declared that he has done this multiple times and it has never really let him down. 'It really works,' Carrey declared.

It did not take long before the X post got thousands of views on the platform as people started realising that the actor has been fooling them for several years. In addition to questioning the authenticity of old paparazzi photos of Carrey, netizens wondered if he had sent a 'Jim Carrey double' to the recent César Awards.

César Night Mystery: Real Jim Carrey Or Clever Impersonator?

Carrey's appearance at the award show certainly baffled people as he sported longer hair, smoother facial features, and what some claimed was an altered eye colour. Netizens pointed out that the actor may have had mild cosmetic surgery and fillers, while others strongly believe that Carrey employed another decoy to play him at the awards so he could have his day 'totally unmolested', as he put it in the Letterman interview.

So was it really Jim Carrey that night? Representatives for the star and officials from the César Awards confirmed it was Carrey himself who attended the ceremony. It was even noted that he had delivered part of his acceptance speech in French and was acting very close to Carrey's girlfriend Min Ah.

Chameleon On The Red Carpet: Carrey's Award-Show Transformations

This isn't the first time that Carrey altered his appearance for an awards show. At the 1999 MTV Movie Awards, he won the 'Best Male Performance' award for The Truman Show and shocked audiences by stepping up to the stage dressed like the late rock star Jim Morrison of the '70s rock band The Doors.

For now, Carrey's representatives have neither confirmed or denied whether the actor underwent cosmetic surgery prior to his appearance at the César. Likewise, it has not been revealed whether the 'Jim Carrey' who showed up for the ceremony was an impersonator or the real deal. Nevertheless, people continue to be mystified by the comedian who values his privacy possibly more than most Hollywood stars these days.
