Joe Rogan may have finally started pulling at a political thread that has been sitting untouched for years.

During a conversation with Chris Williamson, the influential podcast host questioned the origins of the Hunter Biden laptop material and wondered aloud if the story that helped fuel attacks on Joe Biden before the 2020 election could have been part of a wider operation.

His questions immediately provided ammunition for critics who argue that Rogan helped amplify MAGA narratives before beginning to reconsider some of them.

The moment has also reignited scrutiny of the complicated chain of events surrounding the laptop, Rudy Giuliani and the material that emerged weeks before the 2020 presidential vote.

Rogan Questions Where the Hunter Biden Data Really Came From

Rogan questioned how the enormous quantity of photographs, messages and other material associated with Hunter Biden could have originated from a single laptop.

He floated the possibility that information could have been accessed through cloud storage before being assembled elsewhere.

'Is the laptop real or is it?' Rogan asked during the conversation.

Williamson explained that Hunter Biden had reportedly questioned the idea that the entire collection of material came from one physical device. Rogan then explored whether someone could have accessed cloud accounts through a computer and subsequently compiled the information.

The distinction matters because the original 2020 controversy centred on a Delaware repair shop and a MacBook Pro allegedly left there for repair. Contemporary reporting noted that the shop owner could not definitively establish that Hunter Biden was the person who had left the computer.

The 2020 Laptop Story Became an Election-Time Bombshell

The laptop controversy exploded in October 2020, when the New York Post published material it said came from a computer abandoned at a Delaware repair shop.

Rudy Giuliani provided copies of the material to the newspaper, and the first major story appeared on 14 October, less than three weeks before the presidential election.

The story contained emails and other material that were used by Donald Trump and his allies to attack Joe Biden and raise questions about Hunter Biden's overseas business dealings.

At the time, the provenance of the files was heavily disputed, while social media companies restricted the circulation of the initial New York Post story amid concerns about hacked material and possible foreign interference.

Rogan's latest questions therefore touch one of the most politically explosive parts of the 2020 campaign: not simply what the material contained, but how it reached the public.

Rogan Raises the Possibility of a Political Operation

During the podcast, Rogan wondered if the timing and handling of the material could point towards an intelligence operation designed to damage Joe Biden.

'It could have really been an intelligence plot to try to sink Joe Biden,' he said.

That is an allegation, not an established finding. There has been longstanding debate over whether foreign actors were involved in circulating material connected to the laptop story, but the evidence does not establish that the entire episode was an intelligence operation.

The question nonetheless marks a notable shift in tone for Rogan, who has frequently been criticised by progressives for giving Trump and conservative figures a large platform.

The controversy has also become more complicated in 2026. Giuliani recently threatened legal action against Tucker Carlson following claims surrounding the origins of the laptop material, while Hunter Biden has continued discussing his version of events publicly.
