20 years after the first of the Matrix movies, the fourth chapter of the series has been announced. The fourth instalment of "The Matrix" will again be starring Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss. The original lead duo will be directed by Lana Wachowski, one of the franchise's creators.

The rumour mill had been talking about the Wachowski sisters joining forces with "John Wick: Chapter 3" director, Chad Stahelski. However, Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich made the official announcement that it will be Lana Wachowski taking charge of the movie, while the lead members of the original cast will be returning as well.

Wachowski will be writing and directing "Matrix 4," while Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will be producing and distributing the film globally.

While the return of Neo and Trinity have been confirmed, it is unsure if Laurence Fishburne will be returning as Morpheus. Some are expecting a younger actor to play the legendary role. Very little is known about the rest of the cast and what route the plot might be taking.

The first Matrix movie had come as a surprise hit, which made $460m (£379m, €415m) in the box office. Apart from making a lot of money, the series also became a major pop culture hit with thousands of movies spoofing some of the iconic Matrix scenes.

"The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolution" were not as big as the original Matrix film, but the entire franchise could be considered a massive success. At the box office, "The Matrix Trilogy" made more than $1.6bn (£1.3bn, €1.4bn).

Lily Wachowski will not be a part of the project but she seems to be supportive of her sister taking the franchise forward on her own. In an interview, Lily told Slash Films: "I don't have any ownership over stuff like that, so whatever story anybody wants to tell, I can't wait to hear. I hope it's better than the original."

According to Variety, the production process will commence from 2020. Fans will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Matrix on August 30.
