Tensions between Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were evident even before the rapper's recent breakdown claims a source, as speculation continues to swirl about the state of their marriage.

It has been a tumultuous few months for the pair, with Kardashian the victim of a gunpoint robbery at her Paris hotel room in October, and West subsequently suffering a "psychiatric emergency" during his scrapped Saint Pablo tour last month, resulting in an emergency evaluation in hospital.

The strain that these dramatic events put on the couple, who married in 2014, has been much speculated, with some reports hinting a divorce could be on the cards.

However, a source has now told People that relations were already fractious prior to the events of the last few months, with Kardashian confused by her husband's behaviour, because she was unaware of his mental state.

"The divorce rumours come from before he had the breakdown," said the source. "She didn't know what was up with him and they weren't spending time together. She didn't realise it was a mental breakdown."

West's hospitalisation followed a series of bizarre onstage rants in which the 39-year-old expressed apparent support for Donald Trump and suggested Jay Z had contract killers "coming for his head".

But the source added that although the robbery and West's mental health issues presented an "added stress" to their relationship, a split between the reality television star and musician is "not even a point of discussion".

"He had a breakdown, but it does not pertain to them not getting along," the source explained. "There's truly no truth behind divorce rumours… it's not something she would divorce him over".

West is now living back at home with his wife and children, North, two, and Saint, 11 months, after being away from his family for "medical reasons".

However, West has still managed to ignite controversy by visiting President-elect Donald Trump at Trump Towers. Kardashian reportedly declined to join her husband.
