The most intriguing game characters in the Mass Effect (ME) franchise are undoubtedly the Reapers, with their sheer technological prowess, enormous size and unmatched power. An ME3 (Mass Effect 3) gamer would have found it the hard way that beating or destroying the Reapers, has been the most challenging task through the ME trilogy as it requires the player to garner maximum EMS (Effective Military Strength) score possible before launching an assault on the Cerberus headquarters in Mass Effect 3.

BioWare has announced the Leviathan DLC, which will focus on the origin of the Reapers and link itself to the ME3 storyline. The bizarre ending of the ME3 notwithstanding, it remains to be seen how BioWare will add substance to the new single-player DLC - Leviathan. As most fans would have expected a twist in the tale towards the grand finale of Mass Effect 3, some unanswered questions regarding the creation of Reapers might form the crux of the story with the new DLC.

As Kotaku notes, Mass Effect 3's highly anticipated add-on campaign for single-player, which was rumoured weeks ago, has been finally confirmed for release at EA's Summer Showcase event. Here is the formal description of the Leviathan DLC as stated by BioWare:

"Mass Effect 3: Leviathan is the first story-driven, single player DLC to be made available since Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut. Leviathan expands upon the events of Mass Effect 3 with gripping and emotional storytelling, compelling new characters, powerful weapons and unique upgrades. Players will be able to discover more about the origins of the reapers as they race across the galaxy to unravel the mystery that surrounds the fabled Leviathan."
