Meghan Markle is reported to have quietly signed on to play herself in a new Hollywood film called Close Personal Friends, marking what could be her first on-screen role since joining the royal family in 2018.

Markle's past acting work on Suits, where her 'very sexy' portrayal of paralegal Rachel Zane is said to have unsettled some within the royal family, remains widely discussed. The duchess, now 44, starred in the US legal drama from 2011 until 2017, leaving the show shortly before her engagement to Prince Harry and her formal entry into royal life the following spring. That decision was widely viewed at the time as a clean break from Hollywood in favour of duties tied to her new royal status.

Markle's Suits Past and Royal Tensions

Meghan Markle's performance in Suits was her breakout role and the one that made her a recognisable television name. The series, filmed in Toronto, followed high-flying lawyers at a New York law firm, with Meghan's character, Rachel Zane, involved in a central romance with Patrick J. Adams's character, Mike Ross. The relationship was portrayed openly and without restraint.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Eliza Roberts, wife of Meghan's Suits co-star Eric Roberts, suggested that the explicit nature of some scenes conflicted with the expectations of a future duchess. 'It is tricky because of the monarchy. Her role in Suits was very sexy,' she said, arguing that the combination of royal protocol and Meghan's on-screen history created a tension that was hard to navigate.

Referring to Meghan's love scenes with Adams, Roberts added that royal insiders had found the episodes challenging to watch. 'Her making love with another man, that was just they've never seen anything like that,' she said, suggesting the palace was unprepared for such a frank portrayal from a future family member now circulating endlessly on streaming platforms.

Whether that interpretation reflects the full picture inside the royal family is impossible to verify. Buckingham Palace has not commented on Roberts's claims, and there is no public record of official objections to Meghan's television work. For now, those concerns remain hearsay from someone connected to the production rather than an established fact.

Calls for a Return to Acting

What is clearer is that Roberts believes Meghan walked away from a career she had fought hard to build. 'She worked so hard to get there. That was just too much. Women don't give up their jobs for a marriage anymore,' she said, offering a pointed, if generationally charged, view of Meghan's departure from acting upon marrying into the monarchy.

Despite acknowledging that she understands Meghan's 'intention' in stepping back from the screen, Roberts argued that the duchess is ill-suited to a life lived entirely off-camera. In her words, the Archewell co-founder 'is a young woman who needs to be acting.'

The praise did not stop there. 'Meghan is a star. From the second you see her, she just has star quality. It doesn't matter. It was always going to happen,' Roberts said, suggesting that whatever titles Meghan gained through marriage, her natural trajectory was always pulling her back towards performance, not protocol.

That somewhat romantic view of stardom is not universally shared, particularly among royal traditionalists who still bristle at the idea of a working duchess also being a Hollywood name. However, it aligns with a growing narrative in US entertainment circles that Meghan may be moving towards some form of on-screen revival, albeit on her own terms.

The Rumoured New 'Sexy' Film Role

According to Page Six, Meghan reportedly took a discreet step back into the industry last year. She is said to have joined the ensemble cast of Close Personal Friends, a film reported to feature Jack Quaid, Lily Collins and Brie Larson.

Meghan is reportedly set to play herself in the project, which is understood to follow two couples, one famous and one not, as they navigate the awkward realities of celebrity and ordinary life colliding. If accurate, it would be a carefully controlled role, with no steamy love scenes or fictional alter ego — just Meghan as herself within a scripted story.

There has been no official confirmation from Meghan's representatives or the film's producers, and no release date has been announced. Without on-the-record clarity, any discussion of a full acting comeback remains speculative and should be treated cautiously. For now, it is a reported casting rather than a publicly promoted one.

The question that lingers is less whether Meghan will return to acting in a traditional sense and more whether she is slowly reclaiming control of her narrative on screen. After Suits, royal life and the fallout that followed, even a brief cameo as herself would signal that she still sees a future, however curated, in front of the camera.
