The world premiere of 'Melania', Amazon MGM's documentary about the First Lady, reportedly left audiences 'inspired', according to the film's producer Marc Beckman, despite the film underperforming at the box office.

The premiere, held at the Trump Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., showed a rare behind-the-scenes look at Melania Trump in the 20 days leading up to President Donald Trump's 2025 inauguration. Attendees were said to be struck by her independence, devotion to family, and commitment to her work, aspects of her life often overlooked by mainstream media coverage.

What Made the Audience Feel 'Inspired'

The documentary follows Trump through her professional and personal routines in the crucial days before her husband's inauguration. Beckman, a senior advisor to the First Lady and long-time collaborator, said the film emphasised her determination and focus, despite media coverage.

He also told Fox News that audiences at the premiere were surprised to see a different side of Melania, noting that people 'never thought that the First Lady was this type of a person, so committed to her family, so devoted to her business, so committed to the country'.

The film's narrative aims to present Melania as an independent figure rather than merely the president's spouse. Beckman suggested that the documentary challenges longstanding perceptions shaped by limited media coverage and shows her agency in public and private life.

'Media Coverage Was Mostly Negative'

Beckman also criticised the media for what he described as years of inadequate reporting on Melania Trump's work. He stated, 'We have to, as people, stop thinking about, worrying about whether or not she's on the cover of Vogue magazine. They don't deserve her. She's so above these magazines'.

According to Beckman, mainstream outlets have consistently undervalued Melania's contributions and public service, often focusing on superficial coverage rather than her actual achievements.

The producer argued that Melania presents a narrative that counters the media's typical framing, giving viewers a firsthand look at her involvement in charitable projects, family commitments, and advocacy work. The documentary showed Melania Trump's involvement in children's advocacy and legislative efforts. In November 2025, she won the Fox Nation 'Patriot of the Year' award for her global work on children's issues.

Her efforts include supporting the TAKE IT DOWN Act, designed to curb the spread of explicit images and sexual deepfakes online, as well as participating in international reunifications of children with their families following crises.

Beckman says the premiere showed that the public could appreciate her accomplishments when presented through a focused, personal lens rather than sensationalist reporting, which could explain why only a few media were allowed to watch on premiere night.

Impact of the Premiere

Despite the audience's reportedly positive reaction, the documentary's financial performance has been modest. As of 2 February 2026, the Melania documentary has grossed an estimated £5.5m ($7 million) in its opening weekend at the US box office.

Trade reports show the film debuted in approximately 1,778 theatres across North America and secured a third‑place spot overall, trailing behind big‑budget features Send Help and Iron Lung.

However, early reports in the UK and other international markets suggest cinema attendance has been notably weaker, with some venues reporting very low ticket sales. It also landed a single-digit review on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics saying they'd rather watch the January 6 riot.

Beckman countered these data by saying that the project's primary goal was to provide insight and context rather than commercial success.
