The attack occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on New Year's Day 2021, when a masked man broke into Morgan Metzer's home. According to her account, the intruder restrained her with zip ties, beat her, and attempted to strangle her before sexually assaulting her.

The assailant also altered his voice in an effort to conceal his identity, at one point using a tone Morgan described as similar to a fictional character. During the ordeal, she believed she would die, telling later accounts that she had mentally prepared for the worst. The intruder's behaviour shifted during the attack, allowing Morgan a moment to de-escalate the situation by appealing to him emotionally, which ultimately helped save her life.

Suspicious Circumstances and Initial Response

Following the attack, Rodney Metzer arrived at the scene approximately 40 minutes later and contacted emergency services. His explanation of how he arrived raised concerns among investigators, who noted inconsistencies in his account.

Morgan herself later expressed suspicion about his involvement, pointing to behaviour and prior incidents that suggested deeper issues within their relationship. These suspicions prompted a broader investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Evidence Linking Rodney Metzer to the Crime

Law enforcement officials uncovered significant evidence connecting Rodney Metzer to the assault. Investigators found that he had purchased zip ties matching those used in the attack, with similar items later discovered in his possession.

Additional digital evidence raised further alarm. Authorities reported that Rodney had conducted searches online, including 'how to change the sound of your voice' and 'how long to choke someone unconscious.' Investigators also uncovered a fake hospital invoice that had been used to convince Morgan that he was suffering from cancer, a claim she said was part of a broader pattern of manipulation.

Photos and text messages belonging to Morgan were also found, adding to the body of evidence presented in the case.

Guilty Plea and Sentencing

Rodney Metzer ultimately pleaded guilty to 14 counts related to the attack and associated offences. The plea deal was reached in part to spare Morgan from undergoing a lengthy and potentially retraumatising trial.

In August 2021, he was sentenced to 70 years in total, including 25 years in prison and 45 years of probation. He is currently serving his sentence at Baldwin State Prison in Georgia, and is barred from contacting Morgan or their children.
