'The Northumbria Mysteries' Release Date Confirmed as Robson Green Leads New BBC Crime Drama
Green plays former convict and gambler Joe Ruby, who forms an unlikely crime-solving partnership with DI Rose O'Connell in Northumberland
Robson Green is returning to the world of crime drama with a brand-new BBC series, and 'The Northumbria Mysteries' has finally received an official release date. The drama will see the 'Grantchester' star take on a very different kind of detective as the BBC heads to the North East for a crime series set against the dramatic landscape of Northumberland.
'The Northumbria Mysteries' will premiere on BBC One at 2 pm on Friday, 23 October 2026, with the first four episodes also becoming available to stream on BBC iPlayer from the same day.
When Is 'The Northumbria Mysteries' Coming to BBC One?
The new series will make its BBC One debut on Friday, 23 October, giving viewers another crime drama to add to their autumn watchlist. The first four episodes will be released on BBC iPlayer at launch, although the BBC has not yet confirmed the rollout details for the remaining episodes.
The series is set in Northumberland, with the region's coastline, countryside and market towns providing the backdrop for the investigations. Green has spoken enthusiastically about filming in an area he knows well, describing Northumberland's landscape as a 'principal character' in the drama.
Robson Green Leads 'The Northumbria Mysteries'
Green plays Joe Ruby, a former convict and gambler with connections to the criminal underworld who becomes unexpectedly involved in solving crimes. The character marks another crime-drama role for Green, who is best known to many viewers for playing DI Geordie Keating in 'Grantchester'.
However, Joe Ruby is not simply another conventional police detective. Instead, his complicated history and links to the criminal world give him a different perspective when crimes begin to unfold around him.
Green is joined by Liz White, who plays DI Rose O'Connell. An Oxford-educated detective, Rose initially appears very different from Ruby, setting up an unlikely partnership between the pair. Their contrasting backgrounds are expected to be at the heart of the new drama as they work together to uncover the truth behind a series of cases.
A New Crime Drama Set in Northumberland
The setting is one of the most distinctive elements of 'The Northumbria Mysteries'. Rather than using the region simply as a backdrop, the production has placed Northumberland's landscape at the centre of the story. The drama moves through coastal locations and market towns while following Ruby and O'Connell as they investigate crimes.
For Green, filming in the North East also provided an opportunity to work in the region he calls home. The actor said the area's landmarks were 'absolutely astonishing' and suggested that the familiar surroundings would bring something special to the production.
The series is also part of the BBC's North East Creative Cluster, an initiative designed to increase investment, production activity and skills in the region.
What Else Has Robson Green Been Working On?
The new series arrives as Green continues his long association with British television crime dramas. He remains best known to recent audiences for 'Grantchester', where he has played DI Geordie Keating alongside a succession of crime-solving vicars. Green is also expected to return as Geordie for the show's 11th and final series, which is due to arrive in 2027.
White will also be familiar to television audiences, having starred as WPC Annie Cartwright in 'Life on Mars' and appearing in productions including 'Call the Midwife' and 'Agatha Christie's Seven Dials'. With its unusual detective partnership, Northumberland setting and a familiar face leading the cast, 'The Northumbria Mysteries' could provide a fresh addition to the BBC's crime-drama lineup.
For fans of Robson Green and British detective dramas, the wait is now almost over, with 'The Northumbria Mysteries' arriving on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on 23 October 2026.
