Valdo Calocane's Failed Attack Left Woman with Spine Injury, Police Condemned for Mental Health Facility Move
The story of Valdo Calocane highlights systemic failures and the challenges of handling mental health issues in criminal cases.

Valdo Calocane, a Portuguese national who has been embroiled in multiple Nottingham attacks, remains hard to pin down as his mental health issues shield him. This has frustrated many, including a 22-year-old woman who fell from a room window, resulting in a spine injury.
Appearing before an inquiry, the unnamed woman did not hide her disgust over how the Valdo Calocane case was handled. Her ordeal with Calocane happened in 2020 when the Portuguese national repeatedly knocked on her door as she was taking a shower, BBC reported.
'At first this was said quietly, but then it became louder and the person on the other side insisted on asking to open the door, and that's when I panicked,' the then nursing student shared.
Shake, Rattle and Fall
The woman had just returned from work at the time before the Calocane incident. Upon hearing the repeated knocks on her door, she asked who it was.
Calocane responded by saying it was him. But instead of opening the door, it was when Valdo started to raise his voice and appeared to be trying to force himself into the flat.
Panicking, the woman put on some clothes and started to call for help through a window. She admitted that she considered jumping out the window out of fear. Instead, she slipped and fell from 10 feet to 12 feet to the ground. She was unable to talk or move after that fall, according to a report by Sky News.
Calocane was eventually apprehended by police. However, instead of standing down, the woman detailed how Valdo tried to run towards her.
'He was looking at me with his eyes wide open, and he tried to come to me, but the officers had pinned him down,' she recalled.
Right Call, Costly Fall
Her accident was unfortunate, although not opening the door for Valdo Calocane was the right decision. Known to be a person dealing with mental health issues, there is no telling what could have happened had the nursing student let the unstable man in.
A potential glimpse of what could have been was answered in 2023. This is in reference to the 2023 triple murder case of Valdo Calocane. The Portuguese fatally stabbed three people.
The fatalities were identified as Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, both students at the University of Nottingham. Also killed was Ian Coates, a 65-year-old caretaker.
After that, Calocane also attempted to kill three other people in June 2023. Despite those cases, Calocane was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order rather than be placed behind bars.
Nottingham Police Apologise, Set Records Straight
For their failure to properly handle the case of Valdo Calocane, Nottingham Police have apologised for their failures. They admitted that their failure to issue a warrant against Calocane was a serious systemic operational failure.
However, they explained that even if they did, it could not have prevented the attacks, the Nottingham Post reported.
Regardless, the handling of those events and others after that remain controversial. A probe into the Nottinghamshire Police is underway, and hopes are high that future cases will be handled better. As far as those past cases are concerned, all authorities can do now is issue an apology.
