The Oscar red carpet was certainly not just for the women of the moment, with the male nominees upping the game last night with some seriously strong style choices.

Jared Leto's statement red piped Gucci suit and bold floral corsage really set the bar high, especially as he brought along the brand's creative director as his date, both of them in fantastically alternative velvet slippers that made a nice change from the classic patent lace-up.

Room star Jacob Tremblay certainly gave them a run for their money though in a miniature Armani suit accessorised with Millenium falcon cufflinks and Darth vader socks.

The most refreshing change was the number of nominees and attendees that strayed from the traditional black tuxedo. Mark Ruffalo was dapper in a royal blue Valentino jacket that really stood out from the crowd and many others like Brian Cranston and Sylvester Stallone opted for rich midnight blue designs.

Goibng even bolder, Chris Rock was the satrorial centre of attention in a white Burberry jacket, but had competition from Common who may not have been presenting but showed up in a strong all-white suit and shirt combination.

A special shout out has to go to Pharrell who managed to subvert the formal tuxedo into a laidback look with rolled up trouser legs and no socks.
