Looks like Outlander will wrap the first half of its season 1 with a cliffhanger. The mid-season finale episode – Both Sides Now – might just leave fans guessing about the fate of Claire and Jamie's love story.

"We've got some great episodes coming up," actor Sam Heughan (who plays Jamie Fraser on the show) told Access Hollywood, "…and I think the cliffhanger is – it's just the beginning, really, like almost these first [several] episodes are just setting up the whole dynamic between the Black Jack/Claire/Jamie relationship, but also, all the other politics going on and the Highlanders and between them and the British army, time travel.

"So by the time we come back for the second half of the season, the show just gets sort of darker. The stakes just are raised again," he said. "Everyone's got a lot more to lose, so the story really starts to motor along, I think," he said.

According to the upcoming episode's synopsis, Claire attempts to adapt to her new marriage, while Frank undertakes a desperate search for his missing wife. Later, a fate-changing opportunity presents itself to Claire, placing her in an emotional quandary.

Outlander mid-season's finale episode, Both Sides Now, will air tonight, 27 September at 9pm ET (5pm GMT) on Starz.
