Woman Accuses Pastor of Abuse at 16, He Confesses and Congregation Rushes to Hug Him Instead

John B. Lowe II admitted having sex with a 16-year-old woman during a 22 May 2022 service at New Life Christian Church in Warsaw, Indiana, after she confronted him publicly. Moments later, members of the congregation gathered around the pastor in prayer, while the woman's allegations were referred for investigation.

The incident began with Lowe describing his conduct as adultery. He told the congregation he had engaged in a sexual relationship nearly two decades earlier, said it had continued 'far too long' and announced that he was stepping away from ministry.

Pastor's Confession Raises Wider Questions

For context, Lowe initially presented the matter as a private moral failing involving one person. He said he had no defence, rejected attempts to describe his behaviour as a mistake and asked the congregation for forgiveness.

The response was reportedly supportive. Video from the service showed members applauding after Lowe spoke, with some standing as he left the stage.

The account changed when a woman and her husband approached the lectern. She said she had lived for 27 years with what she described as 'a prison of lies and shame'. She accused Lowe of having sex with her when she was 16 and said the relationship continued for years.

'You are not the victim here,' she told him.

The woman also alleged that Lowe had groomed her and that the sexual relationship lasted until she was in her twenties. Her husband told the congregation that the situation could not simply be described as adultery because she had been a teenager when it began.

'My wife, it's not just adultery,' he said, according to footage and contemporaneous reports. 'It's another level when it's a teenager.'

The woman said she had recently decided to speak after her brother raised a memory involving her and the pastor. She told the church she had experienced suicidal thoughts and had blamed herself for what happened.

Those are serious allegations. They remain allegations, except for Lowe's acknowledgement that the woman was 16 and that he had engaged in sexual conduct with her.

Congregation Prays Around Pastor

Church members then called Lowe back to the microphone and asked him to respond directly. When asked whether he had done what the woman described, he answered, 'Yes.'

He confirmed that she was 16 at the time. Lowe said the conduct was wrong, expressed regret and said he wished he could go back and change it.

'I can't do anything about that except to tell you, if I could go back and redo it all, I would,' he said. 'I can't, and all I can do is ask for you to forgive me.'

After the exchange, members surrounded Lowe while another man led a prayer. The scene, captured on video, quickly spread online and drew fierce criticism, particularly from people who believed the congregation had centred the pastor rather than the woman who confronted him.

That reaction is understandable, but the footage cannot establish everything that happened before or after the service. It does show why the congregation's response drew criticism, however. The woman had described years of shame and alleged abuse. The immediate public response was to gather around the pastor.

New Life Christian Church said Lowe formally resigned from his ministry responsibilities on 23 May 2022. In a statement, the church said it was 'hurting and broken' for the woman, her husband and their family, while also expressing concern for Lowe and his family.

The church said its response reflected teachings about repentance, forgiveness and restoration. It also said staff had not previously known about the allegations.

Indiana Investigation Continued

The allegations were reported to authorities after the service. Indiana State Police later became involved in the investigation, with local reporting citing a conflict of interest involving the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office.

State police asked anyone with information, including victims or witnesses, to contact investigators. The Kosciusko County Prosecutor's Office declined to provide details, citing professional conduct rules.

At the time, no formal charges had been filed against Lowe. Later reports also said no charges had been filed while Indiana State Police were investigating the allegations.

The legal position was not straightforward. Indiana law contains provisions that can apply to sexual conduct involving people aged 16 to 18 when the other person occupies a qualifying position of trust or authority, but whether any offence applies depends on the evidence, the circumstances and the law governing the alleged conduct.

The church service was not a courtroom, and Lowe's admission did not resolve every allegation made by the woman. Nor did the congregation's prayer establish that the wider claims were true or false.

The contrast between Lowe's initial description of the relationship as adultery and the woman's account of her experience became central to the controversy.

The woman described her experience in terms of power, age and alleged abuse, while the immediate response from some members of the congregation focused on the pastor.
