Gossip columnist Perez Hilton is opening up about a three-week hospital stay that he says changed his life — and his beliefs — entirely.

In a raw, emotional video posted on 23 March, the longtime celebrity blogger revealed he nearly died from complications tied to a flu-related illness, before experiencing what he describes as a direct encounter with God.

The video, which he calls 'the most important' he has ever shared, has quickly spread across social media, drawing intense attention from both entertainment audiences and faith communities.

A Medical Crisis That Spiralled Quickly

Hilton, whose real name is Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., said the ordeal began with what seemed like a routine flu earlier this year. But a critical mistake, taking prescribed medication on an empty stomach for days, triggered a chain reaction inside his body.

According to his account, that led to an ulcer, which then perforated, eventually causing sepsis, a life-threatening condition. 'People die of sepsis,' he said in the video, recalling the moment the severity of his condition became clear.

He was rushed to Southern Hills Hospital & Medical Centre, where he spent 21 days undergoing treatment. The first several days were marked by intense pain and uncertainty, with doctors running repeated scans before locating the internal perforation.

Surgery followed, along with a series of complications. Hilton described having fluid drained from his lungs, heart-related issues requiring medication, and a hospital-acquired infection. He also underwent invasive procedures, including feeding tubes, an NG tube, and a PICC line for long-term IV treatment.

Even after being discharged, he continued receiving care at home and said he is still recovering.

'God Presented Himself to Me'

Amid the physical and emotional toll, Hilton said something else happened, which he insists was not a dream or hallucination.

'One of the most special things about this experience is that God presented himself to me,' he said, visibly emotional in the video. He emphasised that he was fully conscious at the time and described the moment as undeniable and 'miraculous.'

Raised in a Catholic household but never fully embracing faith as an adult, Hilton said this experience marked a turning point. 'I don't have to hope to believe. I know now,' he said.

A Shift From Gossip to Family And Faith

Hilton framed the hospitalisation as both the worst and best experience of his life, saying it forced him to reevaluate long-standing habits. Known for his fast-paced career and controversial celebrity coverage, he admitted to prioritising work over his health and personal life for years.

Now, he says, that will change. He plans to attend church regularly with his three children and is considering enrolling them in Catholic school. He also spoke about committing to more time at home, including nightly family dinners and better sleep, something he said he had long neglected.

The emotional impact of the experience extended beyond his health.

Hilton credited his mother, who stayed by his side in the hospital, and his sister, who travelled to be with him, with helping him process unresolved personal grief, including the loss of his father during his teenage years.

At the same time, some scepticism has surfaced in smaller online discussions, with a few questioning whether severe illness or medication could have influenced his perception. Hilton directly addressed that in his video, insisting he was fully lucid when the experience occurred.

For now, he remains at home in Las Vegas, continuing his recovery and, by his own account, beginning a very different chapter of his life.
