South Carolina's Nancy Mace, a prominent Republican figure, is under scrutiny following reports that she instructed staff to promote her online reputation through unconventional means, including Reddit forums. A particular focus was Reddit forums, where she sought to be labelled as 'the hottest in Congress.'

Sources close to Mace's former staff allege that she was highly invested in shaping her image online, sometimes at the expense of taxpayer resources.

According to reports, Mace directed her office staff to create multiple burner accounts across social media platforms to monitor and influence online discussions about her.

One former staffer told WIRED that Mace's chief Reddit-focused staffer was tasked with upvoting posts about her attractiveness and commenting in her favour, even where comments were untruthful.

'I would say [it was] at least a weekly comment, if not daily,' said the informant, former staffer.

'We had to make multiple accounts, burner accounts, and go and reply to comments, saying things that weren't true, even Reddit forums, ' they continued.

'We were congressional staff, and there were actual things we could be doing to help the constituents,' they added.

The staffer described feeling compelled to respond to Reddit threads, sometimes with false information, to boost her standing in online rankings. This behaviour, they claimed, was a regular occurrence, sometimes happening weekly or daily.

The staffers expressed concern that such activities were a misuse of congressional resources, especially since they involved creating and managing burner accounts, which are often associated with clandestine online behaviour.

Communications Director Sydney Long told WIRED, 'It would be a slap in the face to taxpayers across the country for me to spent time on their dime commenting on my bosses personal life.'

She added, 'The only relationship the Congresswoman cares about is her one with South Carolina. She is married to her job and that is all the media should care about.'

Online users are having a field day

People are not having it and even took to online to take a jab at the congresswoman.

'She is crazier than I gave her credit for, and I thought she was 100% crazy before these revelations,' an online X user replied.

'This might've been the Reddit poll Nancy Mace was trying to rig It asked which politician is hotter: Mace or Boebert?' a political commentary posted on the platform.

'I liked every one of her photos on Reddit!' commented another.

'Not going to lie, If I was a congressional aid and my boss instructed me to get REDDITORS to think they were hot, I'd probably kill myself,' wrote another.

'I mean, she's a solid 7.5 That's like a 9.5 by Congress standards,' replied by an X user.

'It's what she does for fun'

Mace is known for her self-described proficiency in coding, frequently emphasising her background as a self-taught coder. She claims to manage her own voter database and has spoken publicly about her tech skills, which she sees as integral to her role in shaping GOP technology policies.

However, former staffers and industry observers point out inconsistencies between her claimed technical expertise and her actual activities.

According to WIRED, 'Mace's office did not answer a detailed list of questions on the programming languages in which she is proficient and what types of devices she uses for coding.'

During depositions related to her personal life, some allege that she programs bots and manages burner accounts to defend her online image.

Political consultant, Wesley Donehue, involved in her campaign, described her as someone who programmes Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram bots for campaigning purposes.

'You need to know that Nancy Mace is quite them, when I use the word 'nerd' or 'geek,' it's always favorable, but a computer nerd or a computer geek,' he said in the interview.

'She programs her own bots. She sets up Twitter burner accounts. This is kind of a thing she does. She sits all night on the couch and programs bots, because she's very, very computer savvy. She controls her own voter database, she programs a lot of her own website, she programs Facebook bots and Instagram bots and Twitter bots.'

Donehue also claimed that Mace set up multiple accounts to automate comments and interactions, although none of these activities have been independently verified.

Legal and personal controversies

In addition to the online reputation saga, Mace has been embroiled inpersonal controversies that have made headlines. She recently made a provocative appearance during a House committee hearing, displaying a 'naked silhouette' of herself to illustrate a point related to surveillance issues.

This act was part of a broader series of allegations she made against her ex-fiancé, Patrick Bryant, whom she accused of physical assault and possessing inappropriate images of minors.

Bryant and others have denied her claims, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has initiated an investigation into her allegations of assault, harassment, and voyeurism.

During depositions, Bryant's legal team referenced Mace's alleged use of burner accounts and hacking activities, adding new layers to the ongoing legal saga.
