He was mentored by Cecil Pickett, a drama teacher at the University of Houston and father of Cindy Pickett, who starred in the 1980s television drama St. Elsewhere.

Hurst made his on-screen debut in The Doris Day Show in 1971, followed by roles in Sanford and Son and The Partridge Family in 1972. Of course, his most iconic role was as Cletus in The Dukes of Hazzard.
